HONG KONG, Oct. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced today that the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Viagra, a prescription medication for erectile dysfunction, for sale from licensed pharmacies in the U. and Canada.
"We are pleased to have received Viagra for sale from licensed pharmacies in the United States, Canada and Korea," said Scott Stahl, Acting U. Assistant Secretary of the FDA.
The approval was based on a report by the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO).
"This approval will enable us to expand our knowledge and access for our patients," said Dr. John Ricks, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), which oversees the drug development process.
"For our patients, Viagra will help improve their quality of life, reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life of those who are unable to take or have erections that are too painful," added Dr. David S. Lee, senior director of the CDER's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The FDA approved Viagra for sale in more than 1,000 U. pharmacies in more than 300 countries and territories, including China, Korea, India, and Canada, for a total of 2.5 million U. customers, or 10.9 percent of total sales, in the U. alone.
Viagra is also the only prescription drug approved by the FDA to treat the condition, which is characterized by erectile dysfunction.
The drug is available as a tablet and in liquid form in several strengths, including 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg. Viagra will be available in tablet form in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg strengths, with strengths containing 100 mg to 100 mg.
Viagra has not been approved for sale in Korea, nor has it been approved by the FDA for sale in the U. for the treatment of ED.
